I saw her reading there
And I said, “What’s that book? I think I’ve read it before.”
And she said, “It’s the one where the girl slips away.”
And I said, ”Ah, yeah, I didn’t enjoy it much,
for I’m more fond when the girl stays.”
And it must have been something I said
because she didn’t walk away

Our conversation led to sex
and I heard her whisper, “Shall I stay awhile?”
And I said, “Go ahead, stay the night.”
And we rested our naked selves against each other
not caring what the other thought before we dozed off without a sleep tight.
And it must have been a comfy bed,
for she didn’t leave before dawn’s light.

I woke up and found her making breakfast
and she was heating tea.
And I kissed her neck.
And neither of us spoke but we both smiled
For the remainder of the morning
And I know she didn’t like that book either.
I know she wanted to be the girl that stays.
